Story so far:
The two, Essex and Surrey are coming off an exciting first round stage of the NatWest T20 Blast last season, having finished one-two in the South Division with 10 and nine wickets respectively.
What followed after that wouldn’t have pleased the Essex supporters for sure.
After being the best team in the competition, Essex fell at the very first knockout hurdle. They went down to the eventual champions Warwickshire in the quarter-final, failing to bowl as well as they should have done. The Bears hammered them for 197 and despite Ryan ten Doeschate’s 61, they fell 19 runs short.
Surrey went one better, defeating Worcestershire in their quarter-final. It was an easy win, after Robin Peterson had bagged two wickets and Jason Roy smashed a fifty to chase down 142 in 16.3 overs.
But like Essex, they went down to Warwickshire too, losing in almost similar fashion. The Bears batted first, made 194 and kept Surrey down to 178 in their 20 overs despite a strong start.
It’s been a poor start to the season for both teams though. Surrey’s bowling was taken to task by Glamorgan, who hammered what already looks like the highest score of the season – 240 for three in their 20 overs. Tom Curran went for 45 in his four after having entered the tournament with a lot of eyes on him.
Steven Davies hammered a 58 while Zafar Ansari smashed a 32-ball 67 but Surrey fell 25 short of the target.
Essex had a tough opening in that they faced Hampshire and went down by 17 runs. Captain Ryan ten Doeschate’s 44-ball 68 went in vain the opener.
Jason Roy (Surrey):
He was the highest run-getter in the NatWest T20 Blast last season, ending the year with 677 runs at 48.35. He also struck his runs at 157.07 to get him an excellent combination of average + strike-rate. As a result of that, he also played in a T20I against India last year and was picked for the ODI against Ireland earlier this month that got rained off. Can he regain his touch?
Jesse Ryder (Essex):
Ryder didn’t have a great start to the season, scoring just one against Hampshire and more vitally took up eight balls to do that. However, he has the strength to go the distance if he can get a start and that’s where he will be one of the more dangerous players for Essex in this game.
Also look out for…
Shaun Tait has been signed up by Essex while Kumar Sangakkara should turn up for Surrey in this game to add a lot of star-power.
Essex v Surrey head to head:
Overall, Essex have a mighty lead over Surrey on head to head, having won 13 of their 17 matches and lost the remaining four. Last season, Essex won both their games against Surrey by five wickets.
