Result:
Sussex won by six runs
Chris Nash & Mahela Jayawardene top-scored for Sussex
Hamish Marshall top-scored for Gloucestershire

Story so far:

Gloucestershire made a strong start to the competition on the opening day when they easily overcame Middlesex in their first game of the season.

A sterling 53-ball 78 by Nick Compton took Middlesex to 175 for three from their 20 overs before Gloucestershire easily chased it down thanks to Ian Cockbain’s unbeaten 91. He used up just 49 balls to get to his score and together with Hamish Marshall was involved in a 98-run partnership for the second wicket.

This was after Benny Howell’s four overs had cost him just 25 runs.

Sussex didn’t have that good a start to their tournament though. Despite picking up wickets at regular intervals against Kent, they ended up conceding 185 from their 20 overs, and then seemed to have gotten off to the kind of start they needed through Chris Nash and captain Luke Wright.

At 112 for one from 12 overs, they were just 74 runs short with eight overs remaining but once Mahela Jayawardene fell for 39, the rest of the side caved in easily.

Earlier, Oliver Robinson had picked up three wickets for them.

Key Players:

Luke Wright (Sussex):
He’s one of the better T20 players around in England, even including the overseas cricketers and his sparkling batting saw Wright get to 36 from just 16 balls in his opening game. Expect him to come good again, only this time he can be expected to bat the distance.

Peter Handscomb (Gloucestershire):
Handscomb, an Aussie, who scored just one in his first game, has an excellent Twenty20 record otherwise. In 11 games, he has scored his runs at 86 and a strike-rate of almost 140, which is excellent going. What Gloucestershire will want from him is a bit of shake-up from him at the top of the order.

Sussex v Gloucestershire head to head:

It’s a close one between Sussex and Gloucestershire, having played each other seven times before this. Sussex have four of those games while Gloucestershire are on three wins.
