The third edition of the Caribbean Premier League is set to begin in under a month’s time with the first match set to be played on June 20.
Based on the highly successful Twenty20 league model that has gained popularity across cricket playing nations, the Caribbean Premier League has been a big hit in the West Indies.
The inaugural edition of the tournament was won by the Barbados Tridents while last year’s tournament champions were the Jamaica Tallawahs. With some of the most talented T20 players in the world game hailing from these parts, it is not surprising at all that the tournament has been extremely popular.
The likes of Chris Gayle, Dwayne Bravo, Dwayne Smith, Lendl Simmons, Sunil Narine, Darren Sammy and company have been very successful in T20 leagues across the world.
The fact that the West Indies claimed the World T20 tournament in Sri Lanka also helped the league attract the number of people who regularly come to the stadiums and cheer for their teams.
Besides local players, the league also has some of the world’s specialist T20 cricketers plying their trade here with the likes of Kevin Pietersen, Jacques Kallis, Daniel Vettori, Shahid Afridi, Shoaib Malik, Brad Hogg, and Mohammad Hafeez also competing despite there being a salary cap.
Six teams will compete for glory. Besides the two sides who have already won it in two years, the other teams who participate in this league include – Antigua Hawkbills, Guyana Amazon Warriors, St Kitts and Nevis Patriots, St Lucia Zouks, and Trinidad and Tobago Red Steel.
While Simmons has been the most successful batsman in the CPL with 712 runs to his name, Krishmar Santokie, with 33 wickets is the most successful bowler at the tournament.
This year’s tournament will begin on June 20 and end on July 26 with the final being played at the Queen’s Park Oval in Port of Spain.
