Story so far:
The hosts Leicestershire didn’t have a good start to the NatWest T20 Blast when they went down to Lancashire in their opener, but it was a closely-fought encounter. It went right down to the last ball off which Lancashire finally registered their victory.
Leicestershire came back in their second game, defeating Derbyshire by seven wickets and win an over to spare at Grace Road to notch up their first two points. It was Jigar Naik’s three-wicket haul that stalled the Derbyshire innings and restricted them to 163 from their 20, before Niall O’Brien hammered a 27-ball 47 to take them to a win.
Durham’s start to the season has been stunning. Under the shrewd and experienced captaincy of Paul Collingwood, they have catapulted to the second spot in the County Championship, and that has been followed by the top position in the T20 Blast following two wins from two games.
Mark Stoneman is leading the way in the T20 format, having already hit a 57 in their game against Lancashire. They scored 155 in that game and then saw John Hastings and Usman Arshad bag two wickets to restrict them to just 139 in reply.
This followed Durham’s 174 for eight against Northamptonshire, which was changed to 89 from eight overs due to rain for the opposition. Two wickets each for Chris Rushworth and Arshad reduced their opponents to 47 for two from those eight overs.
Phil Mustard (Durham):
The Durham wicket-keeper cum opener loves having a dash at the start of the innings and could well be the batsman to watch out. Expecting him to provide another quick start to his side but can he carry on from his start or will it continue to remain a cameo?
O’Brien brothers (Leicestershire):
Leicestershire doesn’t have a plethora of star players but the O’Brien brothers, Kevin and Niall are two to watch out in this format. Kevin can give them a fair tonk and bowl a few overs too while Niall is aggressive in his mindset and guide his team through a crisis situation.
Leicestershire v Durham head to head:
Two of the 20 games between these two sides have ended in no-results. In the remaining 18, both Leicestershire and Durham have won nine apiece.
