After having four poor seasons in the Big Bash League, the Sydney Thunder know it’s time they start winning. But do they have the side to do that? The latest Sydney Thunder squad can be found below.
The Thunder, it seems have tried everything. At least a lot of things. They selected Chris Gayle, they dropped him, they brought in Michael Hussey as captain but nothing’s worked for them so far.
In the first three seasons of the Big Bash League, Thunder barely won a game. They finished last as a result, and by a distance. It was only last year that the Sydney Thunder seemed to have started off well, before tapering off towards the end.
The only bit of good news for the Sydney Thunder in the last BBL season – and it wasn’t much of good news – was they managed to skip up a position. The Thunder ended seventh in the points table last year.
What the Thunder have this year is an interesting combination. They have brought in Ben Rohrer, who should add to their batting prowess while Aiden Blizzard’s signing can also be termed as a step in the right direction.
All-rounders Shane Watson and Andrew McDonald join the side as well, which make it a lot stronger than they have been but the biggest signing is that of one of the greatest all-rounders of all-time – Jacques Kallis.
To be frank, Kallis hasn’t been one of the best T20 players in the world, even getting dropped from his IPL side of the Kolkata Knight Riders but his experience will be immense. What he might not deliver on the field, his experience will compensate for off the field.
Jason Roy, one of NatWest T20 Blast’s best batsmen in England, comes in for Eoin Morgan too while in latest reports, Gurinder Sandhu and Usman Khawaja have been signed on for another two seasons to the Sydney Thunder squad.
The other overseas player for the Thunder will be the West Indian all-rounder Andre Russell, who should be able to add fire-power to the side.
The latest signing for the Sydney Thunder is Clint McKay who comes over from the Melbourne Stars. McKay has an international hat-trick to his name and is one of the more frugal bowlers in the country.
