Having won the title twice and made the final four times, the Perth Scorchers will be the team to watch out. The Perth Scorchers squad has almost always punched above their weight and it will be interesting to see if they go about their business in the same way again.
When one talks about punching above their weight, it stems from the fact that a look at most of their squads has rarely incited one to put them as favourites to win the title. And yet, they have gone on to make the final every time.
A lot of the credit needs to go to their coach Justin Langer, who has crafted his squad out carefully. Over the seasons, he has even brought in overseas players which might not be the big-ticket players of the world but have been effective in this format.
Yasir Arafat has been one of his favourites while Michael Carberry is the other foreigner who was signed up last year. It will be interesting to see whether they are brought back for this season.
Speaking of the domestic talent and in Shaun Marsh and Mitchell Marsh they have a couple of players who will play in case they aren’t able to make the Australian squad. If they are away, it will be down to Michael Klinger and Adam Voges to push their team’s cause, but even the latter could be in line to play a few more Tests later in the year.
The Scorchers have a reasonably strong bowling line-up too. Nathan Coulter-Nile had an above-average time in the Indian Premier League for the Delhi Daredevils, which also marked his return to the sport after having been away because of injury.
He has Jason Behrendorff for fast bowling company while Ashton Agar will double up as a lower-middle-order batsman and left-arm spinner. James Muirhead and Andrew Tye are some of the others to look out for.
In what will also come as exciting news for all the Perth Scorchers fans, the 44-year-old Brad Hogg has decided to sign up for the Scorchers for another season. The chinaman bowler has taken 40 wickets from 32 games in the BBL and has an economy of 6.02.
England all-rounder David Willey has been signed up as an overseas player which means it will be interesting to see who will be their second cricketer from abroad.
