Murray registered a straight-set win over Vasek Pospisil, winning 6-4, 7-5, 6-4 to make the semi-finals where he will face Roger Federer.

Third seeded Murray overcame the tall, big-serving Croat Ivo Karlovic in a tight four set encounter in the round of 16 to reach the Wimbledon quarter-finals for the eight year running. Although Murray saw 29 aces fly past him, he came up with some wonderful lobs and passing shots to move past a difficult opponent into the last eight.

Murray has dropped just two sets so far and has been tipped to emulate his 2013 Wimbledon triumph. His service has held up whenever needed and he has enhanced his reputation as one of the best returners in the game in his last four matches.

The two-time Grand Slam winner has combined 18 aces and 94 winners in his last two matches and he has also managed to keep his unforced errors very low at just 17 or less in three of his four matches.

The 28-year-old has managed to finish his points quickly, thus not letting fatigue set in, and barring the medical time-out against Andrei Seppi in the third round he has looked injury free and fresh for an assault on this year’s grass championship.

Murray’s opponent, Vasek Pospisil, may not be a household name in the world of tennis but he has been the marathon man in this year’s competition. Three of his four matches here have gone to five sets – the other went to four sets – and Monday’s win over Serbia’s Viktor Troicki was his second in a row to go the distance following his win over Britain’s James Ward on Saturday.

Troicki dominated the initial proceedings rushing to a two set lead but Pospisil’s resilience came to the fore once again as he won the next three sets to book his first ever appearance in the quarter-final of the singles’ competition of a grand slam. He had never made past the second round of the Wimbledon before.

The 25-year-old has hit 31 aces and 109 winners in his last two matches but has also racked up 30 plus unforced errors in three of his four matches. Ranked 56th, Pospisil is playing some of the best tennis of his career so far, dominating his service game and hitting winners regularly.

These two have played three times in the past, and Murray has won all three meetings in straight sets. The most recent meeting was in this year’s Indian Wells Masters. This will be the first time these two meet on grass.

Murray is the overwhelming favorite to triumph in this encounter and book a place in the semi-finals of the championship. He will also have the backing of the home crowd to boot but Pospisil will surely try his best to put a spanner in the work.

It is a classic case of an underdog coming up against a giant in the game and who does not like an underdog?
