Novak Djokovic won the semi-final as expected and as we had predicted, there was a tie-breaker in the match. Djokovic win 7-6, 6-4, 6-4 to set up a finals meeting with Roger Federer.
Novak Djokovic sealed a comfortable 6-4, 6-4, 6-4 straight sets victory against Marin Cilic to enter his 27th grand slam semi-final.
Top seed Djokovic had never lost a match against the Croat and his record never seemed in danger as the reigning US Open champion had no answers to the Serb’s precise groundstrokes.
The world number one won his 50th match at Wimbledon against Cilic, only the seventh man to reach that number of victories. After a five set nail biter against Kevin Anderson in the previous round, Djokovic was surely relieved to have a relatively easier passage to the semi-final.
The 28-year-old never lost control of the match from the first game. He hit 4 aces and combined a total of 27 winners and just 12 unforced errors against Cilic. Apart from the quarter-final clash against Anderson, Djokovic has also not dropped a set in any other round.
Facing Djokovic in the semi-final will be Frenchman Richard Gasquet. The 21st seeded Gasquet put away reigning French Open champion Stanislas Wawrinka in his quarter-final clash.
Gasquet has already matched his best ever performance at Wimbledon having reached the semi-final once earlier in 2007. This will also be just his third appearance in a grand slam semi-final with the last one coming in the US Open in 2013.
Gasquet was at his absolute best as he fought off Wawrinka in a five set tense encounter on court one. He overcame the Swiss 6-4, 4-6, 3-6, 6-4, 11-9.
He was a break up in the deciding fifth set and was serving for the match at 6-5 but Wawrinka came back strongly to break Gasquet’s serve and tie the score.
Previously, Gasquet might have wilted under the pressure but he stood firm as Wawrinka started hitting more winners. Finally he was able to break Wawrinka one final time in the 20th game of the final set to seal a memorable victory.
The 29-year-old Frenchman hit 46 winners and just 24 unforced errors against Wawrinka. However, his ground strokes were spot on and he found the lines with exceptional precision. He always had a ripping back hand and he made full use of it as he kept hitting winners against Wawrinka.
The head-to-head record is completely in Djokovic’s favor as he has won the last nine matches between these two and has a formidable 12-1 winning record overall. Their last match, in the round of 16 at Roland Garros, saw Djokovic dismantle Gasquet in straight sets.
The odds are heavily stacked in favor of a Djokovic win as he pursues his ninth grand slam and looks to cement his place at the top of the men’s singles ranking, but you can never discount Gasquet who has shown against Wawrinka that his hunger is back as he looks to cause the biggest upset of the tournament and reach his first ever grand slam final.
