The match was abandoned without a ball being bowled because of rain.
In a thrashing 84-run victory over the Jamaica Tallawahs, the Guyana Amazon Warriors signalled their intent in this 2015 CPL. With half centuries by Assad Fudadin and Brad Hodge, the Amazon Warriors then restricted the Tallawahs to a mere 95 runs.
After setting up an outstanding 179 runs and setting the Tallawahs the 180 runs needed for victory, the Amazon Warriors’ bowlers were relentless. With excellent fielding to accompany their solid batting and disciplined bowling, the Tallawahs were left shell-shocked on their home ground at Sabina Park in Kingston, Jamaica.
The repeat fixture, only three days later, will find the Amazon Warriors hosting the Tallawahs in Providence. Having had solid partnerships that were able to set a strong foundation having been sent in to bat by the Tallawahs, the Amazon Warriors started steadily and gradually gathered strength, never letting go of the momentum that was building in their favour.
Man-of-the-match Brad Hodge with his amazing 30-ball 65 was particularly focused, playing strokes when needed. On the bowling end, his compatriot, Ronsford Beaton was able to secure 4 wickets for only 9 runs. With economy rates of 5.66, 3.00, 7.00 and 3.17, the bowling team of Marchant de Lange, Sunil Narine, Veerasammy Permaul and Beaton respectively, were able to greatly restrict the Tallawahs who never able to find any footing in the game.
While the Tallawahs have the talent and capabiity of rebounding, after such a one-sided victory, and with horrible fielding woes that also did not help flip the match in their favour, it is difficult to imagine the Tallawahs would be able to rebound in their Amazon Warriors’ backyard. In what should be another entertaining affair in a greatly unpredictable CPL, all eyes will be on this match as the winner will have great implications for the final standings as we wind down in this first round of the CPL.
Look to the Amazon Warriors to continue their good run of form as the Jamaica Tallawahs struggle to finetune their squad and look to lessen their dependency on their captain, Chris Gayle.
Players to watch out for:
Ronsford Beaton (Guyana Amazon Warriors):
Having taken 4 wickets for a mere 9 runs with an economy rate of 3.17 is an outstanding achievement against such a potent and deep batting lineup. As the third leading wicket taker of the 2015 CPL with his 11 wickets, Beaton continues to be an integral member of this Amazon Warriors squad.
As they look to the reverse fixture, look to Beaton to lead his team once again, looking to take wickets cheaply and help out in the field as he 2 catches in that match helped to secure the victory the Amazon Warriors needed.
Andre Russell (Jamaica Tallawahs):
Having been the only batsman in his squad to finish with a score of any relevance with his 28 runs, Russell , although more expensive than usual, was also able to contribute with the ball taking 1 wicket. While he has yet to rediscover his IPL form that had him being one of the most explosive players of note in that tournament, Russell is a dangerous threat whenver he is playing.
While he has only taken 6 wickets and only scored 85 runs in this campaign, that is a direct result of the fact that he has come so low in the order and games are usually almost done or done before he has the opportunity to bat. Nevertheless, he remains a reliable lower-order batsman and a reliable bowler. Look to him to rediscover his explosive form as the Tallawahs pursue a well-needed win to ensure they make it through to the next round of the tournament.
