The teams finished as the top two sides in Group B in the group stages with Scotland claiming top spot. Netherlands beat Namibia in the playoff game to set up a semi-final clash against Ireland while Scotland qualified for the semis courtesy of topping Group B and played Hong Kong on Saturday.
Netherlands provided the shock of the tournament when they beat Ireland in front of a vociferous home crowd in the semi-final on Saturday. Mudassar Bukhari’s performance with the ball tilted the balance of the game in their favour.
Bukhari started by dismissing William Porterfield and Paul Stirling in his first spell and he got rid of Stuart Thompson and Stuart Poynter towards the end as Ireland were bundled out for 128 runs. Kevin O’Brien top scored with 33 runs off 18 deliveries but his stay at the middle was a brief one which did not trouble the opposition.
The Dutch had an equally poor start with Stephan Mynurgh and Wesley Barresi dismissed within the first three overs. However, Ben Cooper’s 57-run partnership for the third wicket with Michael Swart stabilized the innings for Netherlands. Cooper top-scored with 43 runs and after Swart’s departure, Peter Borren scored 36 quick runs to take them through to the finals with ten deliveries to spare.
In the other semi-final, Scotland won by 5-wickets after Hong Kong were dismissed for 116 runs in the first innings. Had it not been for Mark Chapman’s 24 runs and Aizaz Khan’s 31, Hong Kong would have struggled to breach the 100 run mark with almost all of Scotland’s bowlers in fine form.
Scotland lost Calum MacLeod for a duck in the chase but Kyle Coetzer and Matthew Cross batted sensibly to settle the nerves. After the duo were dismissed, George Munsey showed great composure to help Scotland take the win with ease although a couple of wickets fell as the side neared the victory.
Both teams have played well at the Qualifier and it is now down to which team dominates the big one.
