Overview:

South Africa will take a 1-0 lead to Senwes Park, Potchefstroom for the 2nd ODI against the touring New Zealand Black Caps on Sunday, after their 20-run win in the opening fixture of the three match series at Centurion.

It has now been confirmed that regular ODI skipper, Faf du Plessis, having missed the opening game, will miss the rest of the series against the Kiwis due to a knee injury. He is expected to be out of action for at least a month, but is hopefully of recovering in time for the Proteas tour to India in October. With two other senior players, JP Duminy and Morne Morkel, being given paternity leave, there are opportunities for a number of squad players to stake a claim for a place in the side.

Rilee Rossouw stood in at the pivotal No.3 position for du Plessis at Centurion, and scored a fine 89 from 112 deliveries, while Farhaan Behardien who was brought into the side to fill a place in the lower middle order had less chance to shine. Scoring a cameo 15 from 10 balls faced, and delivering just three overs for 11 runs.

South Africa’s win in the first game, has lifted them above the Black Caps and into third place in the ICC’s ODI rankings.

One more win in the remaining two fixtures, will ensure that they occupy the position at the end of the series, while World Cup runners-up New Zealand, need to win the final two games to take the series, and to cling onto the third position in the rankings that they held prior to the start of the series.

Potch has proven a happy hunting ground for the Proteas, since the venue became home to ODIs in 2000. Although the first game scheduled to be played there, against New Zealand, was washed out, the South Africans have won sixth successive games there, since they tied against Australia in the first game to be played to a conclusion at the ground.
