Novak Djokovic won 6-1, 6-1, 6-1 to make round two.

The performance of the world no. 1 this season has been an excellent one. He has already won six singles title this year, including the Australian Open and Wimbledon, in addition to the Italian Masters and Indian Wells.

However, on his way to New York, he did run into a few roadblocks. He emerged as the runner-up on two occasions – Rogers Cup and Cincinnati Masters, losing to Andy Murray and Roger Federer respectively. Moreover, in the latter tournament, he was once again denied the opportunity to finish the Career Golden Masters.

Djokovic has quite a history in the US Open. He last won the event in 2011, where he defeated Rafael Nadal in the final. Since then, he has been trying to repeat the same feat again, but has been highly unsuccessful. The following year, he lost to Murray in the final, while last year, he was stunned in the semifinal itself by the Japanese star Kei Nishikori.

On the other hand, Souza, who is ranked more than 80 places below Djokovic, has had a really disastrous season. With a record of 7-15, he has almost all of his first round matches so far. Prior to coming here, his last tournament was in Austria, where he lost the opening round to Andreas Haider-Maurer.
