Federer advances to the quarter-final after beating Isner in straight sets.
Federer needed just a little over an hour to make his way into the second week at the Flushing Meadows. He was up against the German Philipp Kohlschreiber, whom he defeated in straight sets 6-3, 6-4, 6-4, producing 27 winners and breaking on five out eight chances.
The world no. 2, who was the semifinalist in the tournament last year, has had a remarkable season so far. Certainly in a league of his own, Federer has silenced his critics in style by winning five trophies, along with playing some exceptional tennis.
Following his defeat in the final of the Wimbledon at the hands of Novak Djokovic, he moved on to avenge the loss in the Cincinnati Masters, where he routed the Serb in straight sets in the final. With a record of 48-7 now, he looks considerably stronger.
Standing in his way is Isner, who won his round three match with ease against the Czech Jiri Vesely. Like the Swiss, he too is yet to drop a set in the tournament. His overall season has been a good one, comprising of a singles title and a couple of decent runs. The world no. 13 was the semifinalist in Miami Masters and runner-up in Citi Open. Most recently, he reached the quarterfinal in Rogers Cup.
Federer is definitely the favorite one for this match, owing to his immense experience. Isner can create problems, but the top seed should see through them.
