With Australia up 2-0, they will look to seal the series against England in the third ODI that will be played at Manchester on Tuesday. The England v Australia 3rd ODI betting tips & predictions can be found in this article.
England win by 93 runs but Australia still lead the series 2-1.
Two matches gone and England are back to playing the kind of cricket that had made them open to criticism. There has been a fight obviously, but their bowlers and their batsmen have fallen way short of what Australia have managed to achieve in the games.
In both the first two ODIs, Australia have gotten themselves to more than 300, which is excellent going now that the regulations have changed back in favour of the bowlers a tad. And while the English openers, Alex Hales and Jason Roy have provided the side with the kind of start that should help, the rest of the batting has struggled to get going.
Eoin Morgan played the kind of knock in the second ODI that he has often done but it came too late in the day. What England needed for someone to get going with him but the likes of James Taylor, Ben Stokes and Jos Buttler have all fallen by the wayside rather too quickly.
What that means is England are struggling to keep afloat in the series and have already made one change to the squad. The off-colour Buttler has been dropped and Jonny Bairstow has been brought into the ODI side.
Mark Wood was dropped after the first game and Liam Plunkett was introduced into the side but on pitches where it isn’t going to swing too much, the English bowling is always going to struggle.
Australia have done most things right but have been hit by injuries. Three of their men are down and ruled out of the series, and that could have a bearing on how they go in the rest of the matches.
David Warner suffered a hand injury, a fractured thumb, and that’s left the selectors to go back to Aaron Finch, who was earlier himself ruled out because of an injury. Finch will now partner Joe Burns at the top of the order.
Also ruled out of the series is all-rounder Shane Watson and quick bowler Nathan Coulter-Nile but it isn’t clear who will make the side in their place. Good chance that Peter Handscomb and John Hastings, the other two who were named in the Aussie squad as replacements, might have to wait out their chance for now.
One or both of James Pattinson and Ashton Agar could come into the Aussie playing XI.
What remains to be seen is if it affects the Australian bowling in any way. Their batting, to me, looks quite strongly already and shouldn’t face any adverse consequences.
England v Australia ODIs head to head:
Australia have now won 11 of the last 12 ODIs they have played against England. Overall, it’s 79-49 in favour of Australia, which shows the continuing gulf between the two sides in this format of the game.
