While it has mostly been a week full of doom and gloom for the rugby loving public of England, following their defeat at Twickenham last Saturday Evening, against wales in Pool A of the 2015 World Cup, there is the chance to put things right this weekend, when they face Australia in front of another capacity crowd at the home of the RFU.

With a final game against the whipping boys of Uruguay in Manchester, England know that their immediate World Cup destiny remains in their own hands. A win against the Wallabies on Saturday, would almost certainly mean that England will qualify for the quarter-finals, leaving Australia in a shoot-out for the other qualifying place.

Although they arrived in England as the newly crowned Rugby Championship title winners, having completed a Grand Slam of wins against New Zealand, South Africa and Argentina, it has been difficult to gauge the form of the Wallabies since they began their chase for the World title.

They looked seriously under-cooked against Fiji in Cardiff, where they won by 28-13, but failed to secure a bonus point, and two of their three tries came from line-out catch and drives. The Wallabies then fielded what was very much a backup XV, who galloped to an 11 try romp in Birmingham, against Uruguay as they eased home by 65-3.

The last four meetings of these two sides have all taken place at Twickenham, with England winning three of those contests. However, neither team has managed more than two tries in any of those matches, and it would be a surprise if such an important encounter was to produce a try fest on this occasion either.

Not that the World Cup hosts will look beyond a win by any margin. Defeat would make history, as the Red Rose would become the first host side ever to fail to make it into the knockout stages of the tournament.
