India will hope to make a decent start to the ODI series against South Africa after losing the T20Is. The two sides meet in the first ODI at Kanpur on Sunday and you can get all the India v South Africa 1st ODI betting tips & predictions in the article that follows.
South Africa won by five runs and as predicted by us, Rohit Sharma and AB de Villiers top-scored for India and South Africa respectively.
It’s been a hellish start for India in the T20Is. They lost a close first game because of a poor bowling effort and then in the second game, it was the turn of their batting to give way to another defeat, this time a crushing one. What India, and more specifically, MS Dhoni now needs is to get off to a stronger side against a team which will welcome back some of their better players for this format.
Yes, India will do well to remember that the likes of Dale Steyn, Vernon Philander and Morne Morkel didn’t feature in the ODIs. They will be around for the ODIs and won’t make the batsmen’s life any easier.
On their part, India will also bring back Umesh Yadav, but the rest of the attack might not look too different. Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Mohit Sharma could back him up in the pace bowling department but if the pitch seems to play too low, then the captain might bring in Stuart Binny and feature a second spinner in Amit Mishra.
What remains to be seen is what do India do with their batting. There were a lot of talks in the T20Is about the selection of Ambati Rayudu over Ajinkya Rahane, but the latter should return to take his place in the side in this format.
South Africa will be led by AB de Villiers, who is one of the best in the world in this format currently. He did have his problems against R Ashwin in the T20Is which could make their battle an interesting one.
The quandary South Africa have is an age-old one – do they play six or seven batsmen? In turn, they will go into the game with an extra bowler or not. With JP Duminy playing a decent role with the ball and Farhaan Behardien a seam bowling option, chances for a seven-batsmen-four-bowlers theory is a bright one.
What’s interesting to note is that this will be a day game, which makes the toss a rather vital commodity. Batting first won’t be easy and the early-morning help that the quick bowlers get could well make the difference between the two teams.
On the other side of the spectrum is the fact the pitch could get slower and lower as the match progresses, which means chasing could get difficult too. However, the effect of the early morning moisture could be more than that of the later slowness and the team winning the toss could well want to field first.
India v South Africa head to head in ODIs:
It’s 42-26 in favour of South Africa, but the last time they met was in the World Cup earlier this year and India had ravaged through their opponents by 130 runs at the MCG in Melbourne.
