Result:
Afghanistan levelled the series with a 58-run win over Zimbabwe in the second ODI.

Overview:

While Zimbabwe were favourites to win the first ODI against the touring Afghanistan team, the margin and manner of their victory was completely unexpected.

While a crushing eight wicket victory will be seen by the hosts as a just reward for the hard work that they have put in during the recent months that has seen a number of leading Test playing nations tour the country, playing international fixtures, for the visitors the result will be one of blazing disappointment.

Zimbabwe’s batting has been an Achilles Heel throughout the incoming tours of recent months, but they have yet to be tested by Afghanistan.

Wellington Masakadza produced his best ever ODI figures in Bulawayo in the first fixture of 4 for 21, and was more than ably backed up by the debutant Tendai Chisoro and Luke Jongwe who took three wickets each, which saw the visitors dismissed for a measly 122.

Under no pressure, Zimbabwe’s batsmen were able to chase down their target in less than half of their allocated 50-overs, for the loss of just two wickets, with Chamu Chibhabha leading the way with a half-century. .

Afghanistan’s poor display with the bat was compounded by the fact that the pitch was a typically flat strip at the Queen’s Sports Club in Bulawayo, and that having won the toss they got to use it first.

The tourists need to improve their performances in the rest of the series, to avoid becoming stuck between a rock and a hard place.

They need more exposure to top level competition, to continue their improvement, but unless they are more consistently competitive, the offer of matches against the leading nations are not going to be forthcoming.

The immediate signs are not looking good, however. the tourists had played three 50-over warm up matches immediately prior to the first ODI, and still produced an insipid performance with the bat, that left them a beaten side well before Zimbabwe hit the winning runs.
