The Renegades won chasing their target against the Heat in the last over to make it three predictions correct for us.
Both sides have plenty of room for improvement on last season’s showing in the tournament, when the Heat became only the second team to pick up the wooden spoon, Sydney Thunder having finished bottom of the table in the first three editions of the BBL. The Renegades fared little better, their three wins leaving them in sixth position.
Last season was not unusual for these two sides, who have both only ever qualified for the knockout stages on one occasion. In the 2012-13 season, the Renegades lost just one match in the regular season and finished four points clear at the top of the table.
Unfortunately, they found no benefit from a home semi-final, where they lost by 15 runs to Saturday’s opponents.
The Heat had finished in fourth place, finishing ahead of the Adelaide Strikers and Hobart Hurricanes on overall run rate. Having dismissed the Renegades, the Heat went on to secure victory in Perth against the Scorchers by 34 runs.
The Heat’s skipped, Chris Lynn, who was always likely to have to bear the weight of his side’s batting, has lost the batting skills and experience of New Zealand captain, Brendan McCullum, who will now be concentrating on his international commitments.
He will have the West Indian opener, Lendl Simmons at his disposal, who has been playing with some success in the Bangladesh Premier League (BPL), although he will find the wickets in Australia completely different in nature to those he played on in Asia.
Renegades will be lead by Aaron Finch, such a force in limited overs cricket. However, that ability in the shorter formats are likely to mean that Finch will be required by Australia for their series against the West Indies and India.
However, if Chris Gayle is fit to take his place in the starting line up, then the supporters at the Etihad Stadium could be in for a thrilling season.
