Overview:

Heat opened their campaign with a defeat against Melbourne Renegades at the Gabba. Although they posted a challenging total of 180-5, with contributions right down the order, and a top score by skipper Chris Lynn of 35 off of 20 deliveries, they were charged with defending that score against potentially the most destructive batting line up in this season’s tournament.

Although they managed to see the back of Chris Gayle and his golden bat for just 23, Renegades captain Aaron Finch and Cameron White put together a partnership of 11 for the second wicket in just over 12 overs, and although they both fell with the score on 149, Matthew Wade and Dwayne Bravo, two more big hitters crashed their team to a win with still three balls remaining.

While The Heat were competitive in their opening game, but were just just unfortunate to come up against a batting line up that on the day was firing on all cylinders, the Hurricanes were totally outplayed in their season opener. Travelling to the Sydney Cricket Ground to take on the Sixers, they fell to a 95 run defeat, after being dismissed for a mere 91.

Although Cameron Boyce and Dan Christian bowled their eight overs for just 49 runs, none of the other five bowlers tried by Tim Paine was able to exert any control on the home side’s batsmen. However, worse than the bowling performance, was the showing with the bat.

Although George Bailey scored a comfortable 62 not out from 45 balls, there was complete mayhem around him, as the next highest score was extras, that contributed seven runs. Nathan Lyon with 5-23 took the plaudits, but the Hurricanes never got to grips with any of the opposition bowlers.
