The eighth match of the current Big Bash League (BBL) between the Melbourne Renegades and the Sydney Sixers, which takes place on Wednesday 23rd December at the Docklands Stadium, promises plenty of fireworks for those spectators lucky enough to be in attendance. The Sixers registered another win by beating the Renegades in this game. Two wins for them.

The Renegades will be playing only their second match of the campaign, having opened with a win away to the Brisbane Heat at the Gabba, when they chased down 181 to win the game by 7-wickets with three balls remaining.

The Sixers will be playing their third match of the season, The first two games have brought them one win and one loss. They opened the tournament with a Sydney derby against the Sydney Thunder and the Spotless Stadium, and suffered a surprise 36 run defeat.

They did however, recover to claim the points when they travelled to Tasmania to take on the Hobart Hurricanes, who they crushed by 95 runs. Nathan Lyons taking 5-23 as the home side were dismissed for a paltry 91.

Traditionally there is little to choose between the two sides, with the four previous meetings being evenly split with two wins a piece.

The Renegades have perhaps the most all-round destructive batting line up in the tournament this year, and away from the spin friendly Sydney Cricket Ground (SCG), the Sixers might find that their slow bowlers are meat and drink to the likes of Chris Gayle and Aaron Finch.

However, the Renegades bowling line up is nothing like as strong as the batting, and should the batting falter they may find that the bowlers are unable to dig them out of trouble.

The Sixers have proven to be one of the most competitive teams in the BBL over the four previous editions of the tournament, having qualified from the pool stages on three occasions. Winning the inaugural Grand Final, and losing last season’s finale off of the last ball of the match. Both contests were played against the Perth Scorchers.

The Renegades have only once finished higher than sixth place in the regular season table, when they were run away table leaders in 2012-13, but were beaten in the semi-final by the Brisbane Heat.
