Overview:

The Hurricanes have won two and lost one game so far, but their poor overall run rate currently leaves them just outside of the top four play-off positions.

Thunder have been the fairy tale story of the season so far, having won all three games they have played, and leading the table with the last remaining 100% winning record.

In the four previous editions of the BBL, the Thunder have failed to finished at the bottom of the pile on three occasions, while last season proved their best to date, when they managed to finish in seventh position of the eight competiting sides in the qualifying table.

Friday’s protagonists were both victorious in their previous match. The Hurricanes defeated the winless Brisbane Heat, while the Thunder were the victors in the battle of the unbeaten sides, when they beat the Adelaide Strikes at the Showground Stadium in Sydney.

After Ben Dunk and Tim Paine had gotten the Hurricanes off to a devcent start against the Heat, Kumar Sangakkara, George Bailey, and Dan Christian thrashed the bowling to all parts of the ground, to take their team to a final score of 194-4. Christian finished with 56 off of 24 balls, including what has been credited as the biggest six ever struck.

The Heat’s Chris Lynn continued his fine form, scoring 101 off of just 51 deliveries, but he lacked the support to take his side to an unlikely victory. The home side finishing 15 runs short on 179-9.

The Strikers were disappointing in the clash of the 100% teams, managing to post just 117-9 in their 20 overs. With Jacques Kallis at his obstinate best in anchoring the Thunder’s run chase, there was never any danger that they would fail to reach their target.

Given the Thunder’s record over the four years of the BBL, it is hardly surprising that the Hurricanes have won all four previous meetings of the two teams.
