Sri Lanka scraped through to a win.

Five times winners of the Asian Cup, Sri Lanka, begin the defence of their title against the minnows of the UAE in Mirpur on Thursday.

The reigning Champions will be stronger than they have been for some time in the forthcoming tournament, with the T20 skipper Lasith Malinga returning to the squad, along with his vice-captain Angelo Matthews. The left-arm spinner, Rangana Herath and seamer Nuwan Kulasekara are also included in the 15-man squad.

The Sri Lankans will be looking for Dushmantha Chameera, who is now considered to be the quickest of their bowlers, and who performed well in the recent warm up series against India, to provide support for the iconic Malinga, who is still capable of bowling devastating short spells.

The UAE have appeared twice previously in the Asia Cup, when they appeared in the Group Stage of 2004 and 2008, but their qualification for the main phase of this year’s tournament is something of a surprise. The four team qualifying stage included favourites Afghanistan.

After beating the favourites by 16 runs in their opening game, the UAE never looked back. A comfortable 6-wicket victory against Hong Kong, was followed by a 71-run win in the final game against Oman, and a place amongst the “big boys”.

Thursday will be the first meeting between the two nations in an official T20I. Sri Lanka are currently ranked in fifth place in the world by the ICC at the shortest format of the game, while the UAE are down in 15th position.

If the minnows are to poise a threat to the Champions, they will look to Mohammed Usman, a relative newcomer to the team to provide the runs now missing due to retirements from the national team of a number of established middle order batsmen.

In contrast the 36-year-old skipper, Amjad Javed will also be expected to lead from the front with the ball, and his apparently boundless energy.
