If the ICC’s rankings are anything to go by, neither Pakistan or Bangladesh, who meet at Eden Gardens in Kolkata on Wednesday, have much chance of claiming the World T20 Tournament title.
Pakistan are currently ranked seventh by the world governing body, while their opponents on Wednesday are as low as 10th, behind Associate Members, Afghanistan.
However, T20 cricket is the one form of the game, that can be decided by the performances of just two or three players on a given day, and with a record in the previous five editions of the competition, that is only bettered by Sri Lanka, it would perhaps be foolish to totally discount Pakistan before the tournament gets under way.
Similarly, Bangladesh, although doubtful that they can go all the way in the competition, have improved massively in ODI cricket over the past couple of years, and also produced a level of performance in the recent Asia Cup, that was played over the T20 format, which suggests that they are getting to grips with the shortest form of the international game.
Bangladesh qualified for the recent final of the Asia Cup. where they were beaten by India, at the expense of Sri Lanka and Pakistan, as well as Associate Members UAE. On the way to the final, barely two weeks ago, they defeated Pakistan by 5-wickets with five deliveries to spare.
Having had to come through the qualifying process, Bangladesh may have an advantage over their opponents thanks to playing competitive cricket to claim a place in the Super 10 stage of the tournament. Wins over Oman and Ireland, and a no-result against the Netherlands, saw them top Group A, to advance to Pool 2 of the main part of the competition.
Pakistan concluded their own preparations with a 15 run victory against Sri Lanka. With the rest of the group being made up of three fancied sides; Australia, New Zealand and hosts India, the Pakistan team needs to get over their woeful efforts in the Asia Cup and secure an opening fixture victory, if they want to have realistic hopes of repeating tournament success back in 2009 in England.
Pakistan v Bangladesh head-to-head
The two teams have played each other nine times and Pakistan lead the head to head against Bangladesh 7-2. Interestingly, Bangladesh’s two wins in T20 cricket against Pakistan have come in the last 12 months or so.
