England and the West Indies open Group 1 in the Super 10 phase of the ICC’s World T20 Tournament on Wednesday, when they go head to head at the iconic Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai.
England are a completely different side, to the one that failed to get out of the group stage at the 2014 in Bangladesh, where they even fell to a 47 run defeat to the minnows from the Netherlands.
Playing a more aggressive brand of cricket than in previous years, England are now a team with a very real chance of claiming the title for the first time since they were victorious in the Caribbean back in 2010.
Their two warm-up fixtures brought victories over New Zealand by six wickets in Mumbai, with leg-spinner, Adil Rashid, giving notice that he may be key to England’s chances of success, taking 3-15, after the Kiwis had made their usual blistering start. They then defeated a Mumbai Cricket Association XI by 14 runs, with openers Roy and Hales again in good touch.
During the last English Summer, England beat both New Zealand and Australia in one off T20I’s, before going on tour in the Winter, and defeating Pakistan in the UAE by 3-0, before they slipped to a 0-2 series loss in South Africa.
The results of the West Indies warm up matches, have been typical of a side that is capable of being the best in the world one day, and perform like abject amateurs the next.
Against India they were beaten easily by 45 runs, before defeating the highly fancied Australians in Kolkata by 3-wickets with a ball to spare, chasing down 162 for victory.
The West Indies were crowned World T20 champions in Sri Lanka in 2012, but there is little in the way of a form line to judge their chances in the forthcoming tournament. They drew a series in Sri Lanka 1-1 late last year, which was their first T20I action since the beginning of 2015, when they beat the South Africans on their home soil by 2-1.
