After losing their opening fixture in the World T20 Tournament to the West Indies on Wednesday, England are faced with a must win fixture on Friday, when they play the dangerous South Africans at the Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai.

The Proteas, who only recently completed a 2-0 T20I series win against England, at the end of England’s all formats tour to the Republic, will be playing their first game of the competition, and while they will want to get off to a winning start, they will not be under the same pressure as the English, following their capitulation to the scathing blade of Chris Gayle’s bat, which saw the men from the Caribbean complete a 6-wicket victory.

There didn’t appear much wrong with England’s batting, as they managed to put together a total in excess of 180. Although they would have been even better served if someone in the order had managed to stick around at the crease for longer, and play the big innings, to take them past 200.

However, the bowlers failed to show the sort of discipline needed when opposing the talented, if inconsistent West Indies line up. A total of 10 wides and two no balls didn’t help the English cause, and they can ill afford a similar display in the matches still to come. With only Chris Jordan of all the bowlers used, keeping the economy rate down to less than 9.50

South Africa’s main problem ahead of the game, appears to be settling on their best batting order. While it would seem sensible to play their most destructive batsman, AB de Villiers, at the top of the order, both Quinton de Kock and Hashi Ala are in good form.

In a squad that boasts of an array of seamers such as Dale Steyn, Kyle Abbott, Kagiso Rabada, Chris Morris and David Wiese, the one certain starter amongst the bowlers, is the leg-spinner Tahir.

The leggie who performs best, the Proteas Tahir or England’s Adil Rashid may well decide the outcome of the contest.
