Australia arrived in India as one of the favourites to take the World T20 tournament, but defeat in their opening fixture against their neighbours New Zealand, has left them in a position where they must win all three of the remaining Group 2 fixtures that they are still to play, to have any chance of qualifying for the semi-finals.

On Monday, the Baggy Green Caps play Bangladesh at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium, Bangalore, in a clash of the bottom two sides in the group.

New Zealand upset the hosts India in the opening fixture of the competition, and England created a new World T20 record high score for successfully chasing 230 to beat South Africa. In light of these events, perhaps a Bangladesh victory over the Australians is not as far fetched as might appear.

However, if the Tigers are to do so, they will have to do it without either Arafat Sunny or pace bowler Taskin Ahmed, both of whom have been suspended from bowling in international cricket, with immediate effect, after independent tests found their actions to be illegal.

In Bangladesh’s opening Super 10 match, which they lost to Pakistan by 55 runs, Sunny had figures of two for 34 and Taskin two for 32.

Although the Tigers have never beaten Australia in a T20I, now is as good a time as any to be facing the 50-over World Champions.

The Aussies have won just two of their eight games in the shortest format of the game over the past 15 months, and looked decidedly unimpressive during their 8-run loss to the Kiwis, who only amassed 142-8 from their 20 overs, but successfully contained the much vaunted Australian batting line up.
