The Punjab Cricket Association IS Bindra Stadium, Mohali will see its first action of the World T20 Tournament on Tuesday, when the unbeaten New Zealand Black Caps face Pakistan in a Super 10’s Group 2 fixture.

The Black Caps were expected to be dangerous opponents for the pre-tournament favourites India and Australia, who were also drawn in the same Group, but no-one could have foreseen the performances and results that the Kiwis have produced in their opening two fixtures.

The Kiwis started by shocking the hosts in the opening match of the competition. After posting just 126-7, the spinners Santner and Sodhi weaved a spell that the Indian batsmen were unable to cope with, playing a major role in dismissing the hosts for just 79.

Just days later, New Zealand registered a second win, overcoming their neighbours Australia in Dharamsala by 8-runs, after scoring 142-8, a total that looked unlikely to be sufficient to repel the Aussies strong and long batting line up. However, the bowlers chipped away, supported by a fine fielding display, and the Baggy Green Caps came up short.

Pakistan, who have beaten the Kiwis in eight of the 14 previous T20I’s that they have played against New Zealand, need victory on Tuesday to retain their hopes of qualifying for the knockout phase of the competition.

Although they opened the tournament with a comfortable win, against qualifiers from Bangladesh, defeat in the massive clash against India on Saturday, has left Pakistan needing to beat both New Zealand and Australia in their remaining group fixtures. Their participation in the semi-finals may well then come down to overall run rate.

First of all, the 2007 Champions have to overcome a side that are now being considered as genuine title contenders, rather than potential banana skins for their more fancied opponents.
