After their stunning record breaking victory Group 1 of the World T20 Tournament against South Africa in Mumbai, England next face the Associate Members Afghanistan on Wednesday at the Feroz Shah Kotla in Delhi.

While the minnows are a dogged and proud team, it would be a major surprise if they should upset an England side that is full of match winners with the bat, and which is riding high on confidence after the Proteas game.

Defeat against South Africa would have left England on the brink of elimination, having lost their opening fixture against a Chris Gayle inspired West Indies, when they were unable to defend a creditable 182-6.

As it turns out, a win on Wednesday, followed by victory over the struggling Sri Lanka team next Saturday, both games being played in Delhi, will almost certainly see them through to the semi-finals. Although England will want a comprehensive victory on Wednesday, in order to improve their overall run rate, just in case qualification for the last four should come down to that method of separating two or more sides.

Afghanistan have been beaten in the two matches they have played so far, since coming unbeaten through a qualifying group containing Zimbabwe, Scotland and Hong Kong.

Posting 153-7 against the reigning Champions Sri Lanka, they may well have caused an upset, but for Tillakaratne Dilshan who scored an undefeated 83 off of 56 deliveries.

Next up they did well to restrict South Africa to 209-5, but after scoring at 10 an over in the early stages of their reply, they were unable to maintain that momentum and were eventually all out for 172.

The two sides have only met in one previous T20I. That was a T20 World Cup fixture in Colombo in 2012, which ended in an easy victory for England, who dismissed the opposition for just 80, after scoring 196 themselves.
