Having taken an unassailable lead in the test series by 2-0, England will be coming in this match with an unchanged squad. They will definitely be looking forward to finishing the series in a complete whitewash for the visitors, before heading for the one day international.

After winning the first test at Leeds by innings and 88 runs, they faced some resistance from Sri Lanka in the second one. However, Alastair Cook’s men were far too strong to be taken down by the Lankans, as they won this one by nine wickets. The hosts batted first and set 498 runs on the board, to which Sri Lanka responded with 101 all out. In their second chance, they stepped up miraculously, as they ended up putting 475 on the board.

However, this still meant a really small target for the hosts, which they ended up chasing rather easily. Needing just 79 runs to win, they got this by the 24th over.

Sri Lanka’s lack of experience is certainly the cause for defeat here as well. Despite a fairly decent performances in the second innings by Angelo Mathews and Dinesh Chandimal along with a few others, their first inning massacre had already taken the game away from them.

The mighty hosts continued to capitalize on the poor form of Sri Lanka. Moeen Ali scored 155 not out for his side, in addition to Joe Root and Alex Hales contributing to the score. In bowling, it was James Anderson and Stuart Broad who troubled the struggling batsmen and eventually, taking the match away from them.

Sri Lankan team has got a long way to go if they need to get back to their former glory, but it is quite an uphill task to do. They need to bring their flair from the second innings and should retain that if they want a consolation here. They certainly are the underdogs here.

Sri Lanka last won a test back in 2014, but they still lag behind by a couple of wins in the head to head tally. Their recent defeats to the hosts have only made it far difficult for them to catch up.
