Luke Fletcher was involved in a gut-wrenching heat injury in a NatWest T20 Blast game between the Birmingham Bears and Nottinghamshire on Saturday.
Fletcher, who had come on to bowl his first over for the Notts, was hit on his head by a shot from Sam Hain as he was left with no chance to get out of the way of a ferocious drive back at him in his follow-through.
The physiotherapist was immediately on the field and while Fletcher was able to walk back to the dressing room, it was evident from the fielders’ and the batsmen’s reaction that the injury looked potentially a very serious one. The batsman, Hain, immediately winced away after watching his shot hit the bowler while the fielders were left stunned once he left the field.
The captains and the coaches decided to take a 10-minute timeout to recover from what they had seen and once Fletcher had been taken away to the hospital in an ambulance, the play resumed rather gingerly. The play resumed after a total break of 30 minutes.
Birmingham were chasing 159 for a win and achieved it off the final ball of the innings, when Michael Lumb failed to gather a straightforward throw at the non-striker’s end to run the batsman out.

Later, England fast bowler Jake Ball tweeted a picture of Fletcher in the hospital, holding his thumbs up.
Nottinghamshire coach Peter Moores said:
“Luke has obviously got concussion but the reports we’re hearing back are that they think he’s going to be fine and hopefully he will go home either tonight or tomorrow morning. It sounds good news at the moment and we’re looking forward to catching up with him when he’s back and hopefully OK.”
