The UEFA Champions League is back after a long hiatus, as the first leg of the knockout round now begins from Tuesday evening. The fixtures at this time around are certainly exciting, which gives the fans across Europe a lot of reasons to cheer for.

The first fixture is between the Russian giants Zenit St. Petersburg and the Portuguese side Benfica. Both the sides will be coming in this game with an incredible amount of momentum, having won four out of last five matches. However, Benfica are sitting at the second place in their domestic league, while Zenit are the sixth placed side in Russia. Both the teams are evenly matched for this game and this could go either way.

The second game is far more interesting, which is between the French champions Paris Saint-Germain and the English champions Chelsea. PSG have enjoyed an excellent season in Ligue 1 so far, and are yet to incur their first defeat. With the Ligue 1 title practically theirs, they can now focus on the big events like Champions League.

As for the Blues, they are recovering well in the second half of the season, following their disastrous start to the league. Comparing the two sides, PSG have got the upper hand here owing to their brilliant momentum and the in-form players. Needless to mention, this will be an epic battle to watch.

On Thursday evening, the Belgian team Gent will play host to the German side Wolfsburg. Gent have been having an excellent season so far, as they are now the second placed side in the league. However, considering the experience of the two sides, it is Wolfsburg who come out on the top. But given that the Germans have been having a rather shaky season so far, it will be interesting to see if Gent can go the distance and make history in the Belgian football.

Real Madrid have got themselves a tricky fixture this time around as they take on the Italian side Roma in the round of 16. Los Galacticos are yet to lose a match under the leadership of Zinedine Zidane, while Roma are currently the fourth placed team in Seria A. Both the sides have got themselves an incredible line-up, with Edin Dzeko, Stephen El Shaaraway on one side, while Cristiano Ronaldo and Karim Benzema on the other. This is going to be a thrilling encounter, and Real Madrid for now appear to be stronger.

Considering Manchester City, they have got themselves an easy fixture this time as they face the Dynamo Kyiv. With limited experience in the Ukrainian side, Manchester City should win this fixture rather comfortably and see themselves through to the final eight.

Atletico Madrid too have got themselves a relatively easy game to play as they face the Dutch side PSV Eindhoven. The two sides last met in 2008 Champions League, where Madrid won both the legs with aggregate 5-1. Despite the fact that PSV are the league leaders in Eredivisie, Atletico have got more experienced squad and traction. Needless to mention, the odds are in the favor of the Spanish side here.

However, the match that is set to attract the most attention is between the German and Italian champions – Juventus and Bayern Munich. Both the teams are now the leaders of their respective leagues, and have enjoyed an excellent season so far. Juventus bounced back swiftly, following their bad start to the season, while Munich continued to dominate the Bundesliga as usual.

Both the teams and their managers are heavily experienced in this format of the game. While the last year’s runner-up appear to be in good spirits, Pep Guardiola won’t make it easy for them. With Arjen Robben back in the team, along with the lethal momentum of Robert Lewandowski, Bayern Munich are the favorite ones here.

Lastly, defending champions FC Barcelona will take on the English sides Arsenal. The Catalans are the league leaders in La Liga, with their star strikers in a brilliant form. Luis Suarez is the leading goal scorer with 23 goals in 22 matches.

Arsene Wenger has got a Herculean task here to overcome the mighty attack of Barcelona. Having recently made it to the top three again the Premier League, he will be eager to carry the same momentum here as well. Tactically speaking, this will be an exciting one to watch, but the odds are certainly with the defending champions.
