India made a sterling start to the tournament with a thumping victory over arch-rivals Pakistan. Batting first in a rain-affected game, they piled on a score of 319 for three in their 48 overs and then bowled Pakistan out for 164.
Rohit Sharma and Shikhar Dhawan laid a good foundation for the side before Virat Kohli and Yuvraj Singh smashed their way to half-centuries. Hardik Pandya’s three sixes in the final over was enough to carry the Indian side to a biggish score.
And then Umesh Yadav ran through the Pakistani innings to win the game for the Indians.
Sri Lanka’s start hasn’t been the best. They lost Angelo Mathews for the first game because of injury and now they will be without stand-in captain Upul Tharanga after being banned for maintaining a slow over-rate.
Chasing 300 for a win against South Africa in that game in which Tharanga was banned, Sri Lanka started off well in their first wicket partnership between him and Niroshan Dickwella. However, they fell away to the spin of Imran Tahir when the going got tough.
With Tharanga out, it will be interesting to see who opens the innings for Sri Lanka but Mathews’ return will allow them an extra bowling option if he does bowl.
