England not only won the game, they also registered a record, 210-run victory over New Zealand in the first ODI. Batting first they scored 408 for nine in their 50 overs, their first-ever score of 400 or more in ODI cricket and then bowled New Zealand out for a paltry 198 in the 32nd over. Joe Root and Jos Buttler hit centuries for England while Steven Finn took four wickets.

Story so far:

England take on New Zealand in the first ODI game of their five match series on Tuesday. With the two teams having drawn their Test series, it promises to be an intriguing battle. However, the World Cup finalists New Zealand start as heavy favourites against an England team who’ll be looking to put their own World Cup disaster behind them as new faces come into the side.

New Zealand’s aggressive batting may draw the attention of fans, with the likes of Brendon McCullum, Grant Elliot and Kane Williamson putting on a superb spectacle, however wisdom suggests that even one-day games these days are won by high quality bowlers.

William Hill Headline Offers for England v New Zealand 1st ODI:
England to win and Score most Sixes: 4/1
New Zealand To Win & Score Most Sixes: 5/4
Joe Root Top England Bat & England to win: 9/1
Brendon McCullum Top New Zealand Bat & New Zealand to win: 5/1
Steven Finn Top England Bowler & England to win: 8/1
Trent Boult Top New Zealand Bowler & New Zealand to win: 4/1

With New Zealand capable of chasing most scores, and setting formidable totals, it will be essential if England are to have any chance for them not to be languishing at 40-4 after the Boult has had his spell.

The Kiwis have the form in white-ball cricket and some of their players like McCullum, Williamson, McClenaghan, Boult and Anderson are coming off the IPL which should make it a tad easier for them.

Key Players:

Ben Stokes (England):

For England the key player will be Ben Stokes. He showed in the Lord’s test that he can both destroy bowling and take key wickets. Although Stokes’ batting average currently stands at a disappointing 15.66, his performance at Lord’s in the test game showed a player ready to take a step up in a young and relatively inexperienced side.

Stokes’ bowling could also prove key – with no Jimmy Anderson and Stuart Broad, Stokes is set to become a frontline bowler in this England side, increasing his importance and arguably making him the key man at Edgbaston on Tuesday.

Trent Boult (New Zealand):

On this front, Trent Boult is New Zealand’s star. In fact, one of the reasons to select Boult as the key man is the depth of New Zealand’s batting – of course when McCullum gets runs it’s spectacular for the spectator, but even when he fails as he did against Leicestershire in the warm-up game, New Zealand can still pile on over 350 runs.

Boult though, rested against Leicestershire, who tormented England’s batsmen in the second Test match, could very quickly put the game out of reach with a devastating spell which rips into an England top order not currently known for its solidity.
