Three days into the first Test between Bangladesh and Zimbabwe and there isn’t much to choose from between the two sides. And when that’s the case, it’s always good to back the home team in conditions they would understand like the back of their hand.
Make no mistake here, it would be no easy task for Bangladesh. After all chasing 321 in the final innings of a Test match to win the game has happened just 20 times in the history of the game – and we are talking of a history that goes all the way to 1877, more than 140 years ago.
But here’s why we think Bangladesh could go on to take a 1-0 lead in the series, chasing that big score.
One, it’s not the most venomous pitch you would encounter in Asia. Sure, there’s turn, but that’s slow turn, one that can be negotiated if one is adept at playing in these conditions. And if Bangladesh is adept at one thing, it’s dishing out such spin-friendly tracks to opposition because they can themselves bat well here.
Where Bangladesh batsmen struggle is when the bounce for the pacers goes over their waist. This is anything but that kind of a pitch.
Secondly, let’s look at their opponents themselves. It’s not a top side, it’s Zimbabwe, a team that has failed to qualify for the World Cup, and who have generally struggled in this format of the game. In fact it’s been more than five years since Zimbabwe won a Test match against any team. That’s not a record that will inspire anyone, and more importantly will inspire their opponents a lot more than Zimbabwe themselves.
Lastly, Zimbabwe were in a similar position last year. They were playing Sri Lanka, and had set their opponents a target of 391 to win the Test but ended up losing it easily. It was the fifth-best chase ever in the history of the game.
Another indicator, how the Zimbabwean bowlers struggle in conditions away from home, even if they have done well with the bat.
All said and done, bet365’s offer of 20/21 for a Bangladesh win looks very tempting and one that will be our cricket tip for the day.
