The Women’s World T20 begins from later tonight and the India Women will begin their campaign against New Zealand Women. India enter the tournament having made it to the final of the Women’s World Cup last year and it will be interesting to watch how they go about in a format they haven’t done too well.
A lot will depend on how their spinners go, but that’s because the pitches in West Indies are expected to be slow and low as well. The other, more crucial cog, however, for India will be their batting.
The India Women rely very heavily on three batters – former captain and senior pro Mithali Raj, Smriti Mandhana and captain Harmanpreet Kaur. It will be no different this Women’s World T20. India’s batting other than these three, tapers off rather quickly and that can be seen from the following stats.
Since 2016, these three Indian batters make it to the top five run-getters in world T20I cricket, with Kaur (906 runs at 39.4), Raj (873 at 37.95) and Mandhana (730 at 22.8) leading the charts.
The next best for the Indian Women’s team is Veda Krishnamurthy who has just 452, averages just 23.8 and is outside the top 22 of the list.
What this also shows is how well captain Kaur has gone about her business, despite her overall average being a slightly lower 27.9. It’s indicated improvement in the last two years than in the early part of her career.
Now sure, India do have Jemima Rodrigues, a youngster who is just taking on the batting reins but it comes as a big surprise to see that Kaur starts the tournament at 9/2 (bet365) to finish the Women’s World T20 as the top run-getter for India.
Those are rather long odds and it would take just one good knock for things to change. We are backing her to come good too as a captain and a batter and be India’s best as a result with those awesome odds backing her.
