22 years ago Blackburn Rovers were Premier League champions. However, a decline that began in 2010 when the club was acquired by the Indian poultry producers, the Venkys, was complete when they were relegated from the Championship on the last day of the 2016-2017 season.
Under manager Tony Mowbray, however, appointed in February, the team showed an improvement in form towards the end of last season and will be confident of returning straight back up again, especially as their squad has been strengthened with a few judicious transfers, most notably the capture of Peter Whittingham from Cardiff.
Portsmouth, who were playing Rovers in the Premier League a mere seven years ago, have arrived in League One this season from a different route, having been promoted from League 2 as champions in April.
They will be hoping to continue their upward trajectory with back-to-back promotions this season, although will have to do so without the manager who guided their triumph last season.

Gary Cook has defected to rivals Wigan Athletic, another club with recent Premier League history, who, as recently as 2013 were winning the FA Cup, despite being relegated the same year.
Two years later they were relegated to League One, and, despite getting back to the Championship last year, find themselves in the third tier of English football again. Cook will be hoping to guide them back to the Championship at the first time of asking.
Bradford City, guided by former player Stuart McCall, will be hoping to go one step further this year, having lost in the play-offs the last two seasons. Elsewhere Oxford United, MK Dons, and dark horses Bury will all have hopes of a play-off berth at the end of the season.
The relegation fight is difficult to call, but newly promoted clubs Blackpool and Plymouth Argyle may struggle, along with the likes of Gillingham and Northampton Town.
