For the first time in a century, Hamburger SV, the only team to have played in the top flight of German football since the end of World War 1, will be missing following their relegation at the end of last season, along with FC Köln.

In their place have come Fortuna Dűsseldorf and FC Nűrnberg, two teams who can expect to be in a relegation fight at the end of the campaign, along with the likes of Augsburg, Freiburg and Mainz.

At the top end of the table, it is hard to look beyond Bayern Munich, champions for the past six seasons, making it seven.

In terms of budget and resources they are significantly stronger than their rivals, and although Croatian Niko Kovac has taken over as manager from the retired Jupp Heynckes, little change can be expected in terms of their dominance, socially if they make a major foray into the transfer market, winger Alphonso Davis from the Vancouver Whitecaps being their only major addition so far.

Their closest rivals are likely to be Borussia Dortmund, who also have a new manager in the form of Swiss Lucien Favre, formerly manager of Nice.

Renowned as a smart tactician, Favre has previous Bundesliga experience, and has looked to strengthen his side by signing centre-back Abdou Diallo from Mainz and midfielder Thomas Delaney from Werder Bremen.

Dortmund have also been linked with a big money move for Wilfried Zaha from Crystal Palace but, even if they succeed in signing him, it is hard to see them bridging the gap to Bayern sufficiently, which was 29 points at the end of last season.

RB Leipzig, the surprise package when newly promoted two years ago, can be expected to be in the fight for a Champions League place at the end of the season.

Yet another club with a new man at the helm, Ralf Rangnick replacing Ralph Hasenhűttl, they have strengthened their squad in all areas during the close season, and look better equipped this time round to cope with the dual demands of league and European football this season.

Schalke 04 had a strong 2017 – 2018 campaign and eventually claimed the runners-up spot, but may struggle to replicate that this season, especially now they have Champions League football again.

Elsewhere Hoffenheim, Bayer Leverkusen and Borussia Mönchengladbach could be in contention for Europa League places come the end of the season.
