According to a press release by the Indian cricket board, this second version of the Indian Premier League will be, as the name suggests, a shorter version of the tournament.

  • Teams:

While details are yet to be released, the early signs are that the mini IPL will be played between the same teams that have participated in the main edition of the IPL – which includes the Mumbai Indians, Kolkata Knight Riders, Delhi Daredevils, Rising Pune Supergiants, Gujarat Lions, Kings XI Punjab, Sunrisers Hyderabad and Royal Challengers Bangalore.

  • Dates:

What’s also being said is the the tournament will be played over a period of two weeks in September, with the dates closer to the start of the month. This is taking into account the fact that the Duleep Trophy will begin in the latter half of the month of September.

  • Why is it being played?

One of the reasons why this concept of a mini IPL has come into being is because of the gaps created in the scheduling following the scrapping of the Champions League t20 after the 2014 edition of the competition. There was no tournament played in 2015.

  • Venue & Broadcaster:

There are two big questions arising out of this mini-IPL – where will it be played and who will broadcast it on TV and online. There’s enough news in the market that suggests the tournament won’t be played in India, but there’s still debate on where it would be played. For now, the potential venues suggested are USA or the UAE but the costs and the time zone will be a concern for the governing council too.

The other issue is the TV broadcaster, which for now is Sony and Sony ESPN. However, the rights for this tournament will be sold separately and like the Champions League t20 of the past, they could be bought by Star Sports. However, we shouldn’t discount the likes of Sony, Ten Sports and Neo, who could each get down to the bidding war to get the rights of this tournament.
