The tournament is one of the oldest of its kind with its inaugural edition being played in 1981-82.

The Momentum One Day Cup is South Africa’s premier cricket competition. It has been played since the 1982-1983 season, And was well known as the Benson and Hedges Series when only five teams participated in it. The tournament has gradually expanded since then with 11 teams taking part from the 1994 season.

It has been a great success by all accounts because the tournament attracts crowds which are sometimes larger than national test matches. The Momentum One Day Cup 2018 will be the 37th season of the cup. The tournament is played in the 50 overs format of the game and some matches are habitually held in the more popular day and night routine.

The teams playing in the tournament as of last year are the Cape Cobras from Cape Town in Western Cape, the Dolphins from Durban in Kwazulu-Natal, the Knights from Bloemfontein in Free State, the Lions from Potchfestroom in the North West, the Titans from Centurion in Gauteng and the Warriors from Port Elizabeth in the Eastern Cape Province.

The format of the tournament is that it has teams playing league matches against each other in the first phase, which totals to 30 league matches and then there is a qualifier for the second final spot while the first final spot goes to the team which has won the league round by topping the league table. This adds up to a total of 32 matches in every iteration of the Cup. .

The Momentum One Day Cup is slightly different than the others because of the rule that the group toppers in the league phase of the Round Robin phase of the tournaments are awarded a home game for the final knockout round. This has made for some amazing matches in recent memory itself such as last years finale between the Titans and the Warriors.

The batting exploits of Aiden Markram in the final aided the Titans to a massive 236-run victory over rivals Warriors. Markram scored 161 runs off only 123 balls to help his team to a mammoth stand of 425/5 in their 50 overs. The Warriors were unable to reply and collapsed fast and heavy, losing all ten wickets in 31 overs while scoring a measly 189 runs.

The Momentum One Day Cup is such a hotly contested tournament that twice in its recent history the final trophy has been shared by two teams, with the Cape Cobras the unlucky side on two occasions in 2012-13 and 2013-14 when they had to share the trophy with the Highveld Lions and the Titans respectively. The 2017-18 season promises to be much of the same when it kicks off in March.

The points system of the tournament remains the same.
Win: 4 points
Tie, no result or abandoned: 2 points
Loss: 0 points
Bonus points: 1 point awarded if the winning team achieves a run rate of at least 1.25 times that of the opposition.

In the event of teams finishing on equal points, the top three places are determined in the following order of priority:
– The team with the most number of wins;
– If still equal, the team with the most number of wins over the other team(s) who are equal on points and have the same number of wins;
– If still equal, the team with the highest number of bonus points;
– If still equal, the team with the highest net run rate.

Cape Cobras have been one of the most successful teams in the competition since the move to franchise based system – having won three of the last four titles. They would again be one of the favorites to triumph again.

Titans are the defending champions and have a very strong team. They are the team to look out for again as their squad looks complete and they look the most likely to emulate their title triumph of last season.

Warriors could be the dark horse of this season as the team looks finely balanced with the experienced Colin Ingram leading the charge.
