Ranji Trophy is India’s premier and one of the oldest domestic cricket tournaments, having begun in 1934. It was named after famous cricketer Ranjitsinhji who donated the trophy.

The 37 teams that feature in the Ranji Trophy come from various parts of the country, different states and cities, apart from two pan-India teams, Railways and Services. Each of these teams are affiliated to a zone in the country. These sides apart, some other teams had played in the Ranji Trophy previously but are now defunct for a variety of reasons.

2018-19 Ranji Trophy Format

The 37 teams are divided into four different groups; Elite Group A, Elite Group B, Elite Group C and the Plate Group. All the recently added teams are a part of the Plate Group.

Elite Group A and B will have nine teams apiece, while the Elite Group C has 10 teams. The Plate Group has eight sides associated with it. Each of these teams will feature in a round-robin league and face teams in their own group, there by playing eight, eight, nine and seven matches respectively in the groups.

The top five teams from Groups A and B, two teams from Group C and one from the Plate Group will qualify for the quarter-finals. The two Group C qualifiers will also be promoted to the Groups A and B while the bottom two teams from those two groups will move down.

Similarly, the top team from the Plate Group and the bottom team from the Group C will exchange places next season.
