The Sheffield shield is the premier domestic first class cricket competition of Australia. Six teams representing the different states of Australia take part in the tournaments before the establishment of which the teams played in inter colonial tournaments.
The Shield itself has a rich history behind it, the name of the trophy comes from Lord Sheffield who in 1892 donated the original shield as a prize to be given to the winners of the 1892-93 season. There were only three teams playing for it in that era, with the other three being added over the history of the tournament.
New South Wales, South Australia and Victoria were the original three teams with Queensland added in in 1926/27, Western Australia added in 1947/48 and Tasmania added in 1977-78.
The six teams take part in two rounds to decide the winner. The first round is a double round robin format with each team playing every other side both home and away with the top two teams progressing to the final which takes place separately.
This is by far one of the most important events in the cricketing calendar in the Australian domestic season, not only because of its history but also because of the dying popularity of this form of cricket.
The Sheffield Shield matches are played over four days with the finale being a five day affair. Cricket Australia has taken on the responsibility of resurrecting this form of the game by tying in new sponsors and making it more lucrative to play in the league.
New South Wales are the record holders as far as titles go with a jaw dropping 46 titles in the just over 125 years of the competition.
They also hold the record for the most number of wins, having won 337 of the 793 games that they have contested to give them an astonishing win rate of 42.49%. The current champions, Victoria, are also not far behind them as they sit second on this list with 302 wins from their 786 matches for a win rate of 38.42%.
The new season starts in October as always and every team will be hoping to make it to the finals. With New South Wales and Victoria showing no signs of slowing down, this could very well be a difficult challenge for the other clubs.
