The 2017 edition of the tournament will last a total of 12 days and will not only be available for cricket fans in Afghanistan to watch it live from the grounds but can also be watched on television.
Given how little cricket is played within Afghanistan anyway, it comes as no surprise that the Shpageeza Cricket League has the potential to become one of the most-followed cricket event in the country. The tournament was first played in 2013, with five teams participating in that first edition. Shpeenghar Tigers had won the first ever title. This was followed by the second edition where Mis-e-Ainak Knights snatched the championship, and Gulbadin Naib, Noor Ali and Rokhan Barekzai won the Man-of-the-Tournament, batsman of the tournament and the bowler of the tournament awards.
The 2015 season saw a sixth team added to the competition, in the form of Kabul Eagles, who joined the other five in Speen Ghar Prangan (Speen Ghar Tigers), Band-e-Amir Khamaran (Band-e-Amir Dragons), Boost Satunki (Boost Defenders), Mis Ainak Atalan (Mis Ainak Knights) and Amo Nehingan (Amo Sharks).
Speen Ghar Tigers have won the Shpageeza Cricket League title twice, Mis Ainak Knights have won it once while the defending champions are the Kabul Eagles.
The best part of the Shpageeza Cricket League is that it has still managed to attract overseas players apart from their own players despite being a war-hit country. With a little more push and probably some more finances injected into the competition, it could go on to become one of the premier competitions in the world.
