There are a total of 59 matches played over 51 days, including the final which is set to be played on January 24, 2016. The tournament will be played in two phases – round robin league format and the knockout rounds after that.
The eight Women’s Big Bash League teams for the 2015-16 season are as follows:
Adelaide Strikers Women
Brisbane Heat Women

Melbourne Stars Women

Big Bash League is among the prominent domestic cricket leagues in the world. It’s popularity is on par with that of the Indian Premier League, with the fans in Australia making it more grand by the year. In fact, the women there too, have the chance to play in the domestic T20 league, in a separate but similar format to the BBL.
Known as the Women’s Big Bash League, the competition replaced the previously existing WNCL Australian Women’s Twenty20 Cup in 2015. The WBBL has been around the block for only two years now, but in that short time, it has grown to be a lot more popular than its predecessor. International players from across the world are selected to be a part of the teams, who then compete in a tight schedule over seven weeks, to get the ultimate glory.
The eight women’s teams are branded similar to the men’s franchises in the BBL. However, the amount of matches they play is almost double than that of the men’s. Each team plays every other team twice (which isn’t the case in the BBL), and all the matches are played over the weekends. This often includes playing matches on successive days, followed by a few days of rest before another weekend.
Women’s BBL 2017-18 is going to be the third edition of the competition, with Sydney Sixers being the defending champions. They won their first WBBL title, after defeating Perth Scorchers in the final by 5 wickets. Interestingly, it was the second time that the Sixers featured in the last stage of WBBL. In the final of the very first season, they faced their derby rival Sydney Thunder, to whom they lost by just three wickets.
The Sydney Sixers are certainly a strong team, which includes many international caps such as Kim Garth, Lisa Sthalekar and others. However, this doesn’t mean that the other teams are to be taken lightly. For instance, Meg Lanning of Melbourne Stars was the highest run scorer in the 2016 season, with 502 runs. Even though they finished at the fifth place in the table, their highly talented roster is capable of winning big games.
Nonetheless, there are other teams such as Adelaide Strikers and Melbourne Renegades, who have been finished in the bottom two for the last couple of seasons. More than the Strikers, it’s the Renegades who have been unlucky, considering that they missed out on a the playoffs by just a win.
The 2017-18 Women’s Big Bash League is still a few months away, but it isn’t too far of a stretch to imagine Sydney Sixers putting up a good fight to defend their title.
